BPC 157 is derived from a naturally occurring protein in the gastric juice called gastric pentadecapeptide. This peptide is known to stimulate the production of growth factors including, fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These are essential for tissue regeneration and can enhance the expression of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins. 

BPC 157 has been extensively studied for its gastroprotective properties. It can help prevent and repair damage to the gastrointestinal lining caused by factors such as NSAIDs, alcohol consumption, and inflammatory bowel disease.
